What is the difference between New Media and Old/Traditional Media?
We call the social network media “new media” shortly. From time to time we can use it as “social media”. New media deals with, internet studies, online communities and the impact of new technologies on the social, cultural, political and economic stance of a country and the world. It also includes interactive media such as web and mobile applications, digital games and virtual reality. Traditional/old media’s work field includes newspapers, printed press in general, radio, cinema and television.
Why should I prefer New Media and Communication Department?
Because in our curriculum, we combine the academic knowledge of the new media with digital content development and social media management skills to create a deeper understanding of both the industry and the academic approach. We have three main goals as a department. The first one is to increase the intellectual load to improve analytical thinking capacity. The second one is to provide writing and design skills to students. The final one is to improve technological and researcher aspects of students in order to bring them a successful social media management and strategical thinking approach. Furthermore, if you are willing to set up your own start-up company, you have the support of our academic staff.
What is the main feature that distinguishes New Media and Communication from other departments in the Faculty of Communication?
Having a multi-diciplinary approach. In our department, from communication theories to design, from coding to research, from marketing to entrepreneurship, from basic journalism to communication ethics, you learn everything a social network media expert needs to know.
In which fields I will be able to work, when I graduate from this department?
In addition to the corporate communication units of the public and private sectors, you can work in advertising agencies, in all areas of the media sector, especially in newspapers, radio, television and online journalism. You can also establish your own company (start-up) by using the support and facilities of the Information Technologies Transfer Office of our university.
What are the facilities offered by the department?
Our department offers computer laboratories for any application studies our students need. The photography, television, film and radio studios in the Media Center open for all the needs of our students. Also the center has a loaned device system where the media students can loan technological devices such as camera, video equipments, sound systems etc. whenever needed. In addition, students can access rich online library and database services.
What kind of softwares am I going to learn/use?
There is a big range of software courses in our department. In our highly technological computer labs, we take your computer literacy to advanced levels. You will learn Illustrator, Photoshop, Adobe Premiere, After Effects of the Adobe software complex which are highly recommended for any media expert to use professionally. In addition to Adobe Softwares you will learn Python programming language and Android Studio to develop applications and advanced level MS Office, tabulation tools and social network analysis softwares to be able to research and data visualization in high level.
Which equipments will I need?
Although our lessons take place in the computer lab, we recommend that you get a personal computer. You can borrow the cameras and the equipments you need for shooting from our media center.
Are the lessons taught entirely in English? Will I have difficulty?
Although there are times when we speak Turkish, we mainly teach in English. If you finish the preparatory class with a good level of English, you will not have any difficulties.
Do Design and Technology courses challenge students with a social studies background?
No. You will not have any difficulties as all the lessons are taught from the introductory level.
I want to be a content creator, will this department meet my expectations?
Yes. In the department, you take journalism and news writing techniques for the production of text-based content as well as design and video courses for the production of visual content. To melt all these in one pot, technology courses are also provided.
Is it possible to do a minor program and a double major in this department?
Yes. You can do a minor program in many other departments at Yaşar university, and you can also do a double major under the departments of the faculty of communication.

How can I access my password?
Simply send an email to the international office containing your name surname, student number and department and they will provide you with your student password.
How can I join the lessons?
Log into Yaşar Sakai platform (https://sakai.yasar.edu.tr), you will see a “meetings” section for each course you take. Click on it and the new tab will connect you to the lesson. The course times will be announced by your lecturers and be sent to you via email.
How do I choose my courses?
Using your name and password log into OBS (https://obs.yasar.edu.tr/oibs/ogrenci/login.aspx) and select your courses. Your advisor will also help you in this process.
How can I get Student Certificate/ Transcript/ Preparatory Year Status Certificate?
